People in Birmingham want a public transport system that is affordable and reliable. Instead we are being let down by a Mayor who unveils fancy-looking transport plans on paper, while in reality we face disruption and cancelled services. The Mayor has failed to secure enough money from his own government to fund transport properly. This has led to private bus companies putting profit before people and axing routes. It’s also led to Birmingham City Council putting in money to prop up the bus system while having no say to set bus routes.
We call on Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, to:
End stop-start funding for our bus services and give travellers long-term security, not sticking plaster solutions.
Give local people the power to set routes, as Labour Mayors have done in other regions.
Obtain increased funding for public transport in the West Midlands from the Government.
